Prospects for gravitational-wave observations of neutron-star tidal disruption in neutron-star-black-hole binaries.
For an inspiraling neutron-star-black-hole (NS-BH) binary, we estimate the gravity-wave frequency f(td) at the onset of NS tidal disruption. We model the NS as a tidally distorted, homogeneous, Newtonian ellipsoid on a circular, equatorial geodesic around a Kerr BH. We find that f(td) depends strongly on the NS radius R, and estimate that LIGO-II (ca. 2006-2008) might measure R to 15% precision...
متن کاملTidal interaction in binary-black-hole inspiral.
Tidal torque may lead to important effects in the strong field interaction at the end point of the inspiral of two rapidly rotating black holes. We point out here that in such a case the exchange of spin and orbital angular momentum may significantly affect the energy and waveform of late stage gravitational waves, and may play an important role in the shedding of excess angular momentum. We ar...
متن کاملThe Dynamical Evolution of Black Hole-Neutron Star Binaries in General Relativity: Simulations of Tidal Disruption
We calculate the first dynamical evolutions of merging black hole-neutron star binaries that construct the combined black hole-neutron star spacetime in a general relativistic framework. We treat the metric in the conformal flatness approximation, and assume that the black hole mass is sufficiently large compared to that of the neutron star so that the black hole remains fixed in space. Using a...
متن کاملThe Stream-stream Collision after the Tidal Disruption of a Star around a Massive Black Hole
A star can be tidally disrupted around a massive black hole. It has been known that the debris forms a precessing stream, which may collide with itself. The stream collision is a key process determining the subsequent evolution of the stellar debris: if the orbital energy is efficiently dissipated, the debris will eventually form a circular disk (or torus). In this paper, we have numerically st...
متن کاملTidal Disruption of a Solar Type Star by a Super-Massive Black Hole
We study the long term evolution of a solar type star that is being disrupted by a super massive (10 M⊙) black hole. The evolution is followed from the disruption event, which turns the star into a long thin stream of gas, to the point where some of this gas returns to pericenter and begins its second orbit around the black hole. Following the evolution for this long allows us to determine the ...
